MMUST and Kabras blank Eldoret and Mbale at Victoria Tournament in Kakamega – DAILY SPORT
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Kabras Sugar dominated the quarterfinals of the Lake Victoria Cup, the inaugural Western Kenya rugby15s tournament played today at the MMUST ground, Kakamega County.
The Kenya Cup side MMUST thrashed visiting championships side Eldoret 51-0 to qualify to play into the semifinals while Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar were 41-0 winners over Mbale RFC during the quarterfinals.
Following the victory, MMUST will be Western Bulls while Kabras take on Kisumu RFC at the semifinals.
Kisumu qualified to play in the semifinals after they were handed a bye by Kisii RFC who failed to travel to Kisumu while Bulls were handed a bye when the University of Eldoret (UOE) gave the tournament a wide berth as they play in the Varsity Cup in Maseno.
Erick Kantona scored a brace Griffins Chao and Lameck Ambetsa bagged a brace try each while Collins Ngoko, Brian Ndeda, and Jimmy Mwembe touched down for the students in the pre-season tournament.
MMUST head coach John Asila said that the pre-season tournament is good as he prepares his team for Kenya Cup season that kicks off next month on 26th.
“For us, a win was not that important but the win is good. So far I have seen the errors committed and it will be better for us to rectify before the league begins,” said Asila.
Paul Abuto grabbed a hat trick when Kabras sugar mauled Mbale in a one sided encounter in the first quarterfinal.
Geoffrey Shitambasi grabbed the lead with Ntaben Dukisa failing to score the extras as Abuto went past the white wash with Dukisa sloting in for a 12-0 lead.
Hillary Adhiambo and Asuman Mugerwa scored fast tries with Dukisa slotting between the posts for millers for a 26-0 lead.
Abuto went past the white wash again for his second and Victor were scoring his first with all unconverted for a 36-0 lean and Abuto grabbed a hat trick with his unconverted try.
